New Music | Unfinished by Mandisa

“Unfinished” by Mandisa

By RaeAnn Jent

Mandisa started her music career on season 5 of American Idol. Some of her most popular songs are Stronger and Overcomer. The album Overcomer released in late 2013 and Mandisa admits that she disappeared from the music scene for a few years. In a YouTube video, Mandisa explains that Overcomer was inspired by a close friend who was battling cancer, who sadly passed away shortly after the album was released.

After her friend Keisha passed away, Mandisa began to question and doubt God’s goodness. She went into the deepest depression of her life and stayed there for many years.

As God helped Mandisa out of that dark pit, she was reminded of Philippians 1:6 (NLT) which says,

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Mandisa explains “that Scripture in Philippians 1:6 has become a lifeline for me when I start to get so worried and anxious about everything I’ve done wrong.”

Instead of living in shame and regret, we can trust that God is working in our lives.

Mandisa finishes the video with these awesome words,

“It’s not how many times you fall down; it’s how many times you get back up”

“You’re not a failure, you’re not a mistake, you’re just unfinished.”

I’m so excited that Mandisa has been working on new music. Her press release team announced Saturday that Mandisa’s new album Out of the Dark will be available on May 19th!

Unfinished is such a great reminder that God’s not done with us yet. We often make the same mistakes and live in regret time and time again. Yet, no matter how much we fail, He’s still working on us.

In Hebrews 13:5, God has promised to never leave or forsake us. He has amazing plans for your life and wants to walk alongside you and help you to fulfill the dreams He’s given you. God never abandons us to try to figure out life on our own. He gives us room to mess up, but offers us second chances time and time again.

When we call out to God, He’s there. In our best moments, He’s there. In our struggles, He’s there.

You may have doubts, insecurities, or shame, but don’t let it define you. In God’s eyes, you are a masterpiece- beautiful, valuable, and unfinished.

Favorite food? I am a huge pasta guy—I love fettuccine, spaghetti, lasagna. My parents are both really good cooks, so I am spoiled with good food.

Favorite color? Navy blue

Favorite verse? I’m a big fan of Jeremiah 29:11, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord. ‘Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (NIV). This verse speaks so much truth about not giving up because God has a great plan for each of us.

Favorite Resound song? I like Switchfoot a lot, and TobyMac…they are two of my favorite artists that Resound plays. I really like “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot. I remember listening to that in the car with my dad.

How did you get involved with Resound? My uncle worked at the radio station when he was here at Cedarville, and I started second semester so I already knew some people. This has been a really good fit for me, and I will probably continue it next year as well.

What else are you involved in at Cedarville? Starting fall semester, I am going to be an RA in McChesney upper middle—Shout out to upper middle! I work at the Hive as well as Chucks, so I am involved in the job life.

Hobbies? I love to draw and do art…that runs in my family. My uncle was the Cedars cartoonist when he came here. I also did comics for a while. I love guitar—I’m not the best but I guess you could say I dabble. I love hanging out with my friends too—man, we have a blast. I am thinking of nights when we all pile in my room at 11pm and put up a movie on the TV, and then wake up 3 movies later. We don’t sleep much, but we are all doing okay academically, so that’s good.

Life goal? Ultimately, I want to take over the world…Just kidding! My main goal in life is to be an example of what it is to be a Christian. We all have someone who looks up to us, whether we know it or not. So, we have to be thinking about how we can best model Christ to those around us. Career wise, I would like to work with film and do something where I work with a lot of people because I love to talk, obviously. One of my biggest goals is to have a family and be able to care for them.

Random fact? I was in the movie Woodlawn, and I met Sean Astin and Jon Voight, and that’s how I started to want to get involved with film. I was able to audition for the film, and then see all the behind-the-scenes stuff that went into just a short 5-minute clip of the movie. You can even see me in the trailer—I was one of the football players on the team! I can also do a pretty solid Kermit voice.

Advice for blog readers? “Stay Classy” -Anchorman. Keep listening to Resound Radio! If you want to check in on me and see how I’m doing, check the weather on Resound. Also, God has a plan for you guys. No matter what is going on in your life, don’t beat yourself up too much because uses the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Final thoughts? I have had a lot of fun working at Resound. It has been really fun getting to know everyone—those moving on and those staying here. I have made great memories here, and I wish the best of luck to those graduating and moving to great endeavors.
